Exhibits » Project Area

Generously sponsored by Northeast Credit Union

Create your own art and science projects using all kinds of everyday items and art materials. Activities change daily, so check our calendar or call the museum for details. There is no additional fee for the Project Area, and activities are offered throughout the day.

After completing a thorough evaluation of the Project Area, as well as studying innovative practices at other museums across the country, the museum has changed its focus from crafts with a particular end-product to art-based experiences that focus on the process of creating and experimenting with different art mediums. If the activity of the day is described as "painting," one day you may find water colors and shaving cream to use; another day, there will be tempera paint and crushed berries. You may be painting on paper, plexiglass, wood or rocks.

This new approach encourages children to practice problem-solving and experimenting while having true ownership over what they are creating. It makes the Project Area accessible to children of all ages and abilities, and provides a way for all visitors to achieve success. Much like our exhibits, the Project Area offers another way to "Get Curious" at The Children's Museum of Portsmouth.

New! Northeast Credit Union underwrites Children’s Museum Project Area

Northeast Credit Union has stepped forward to underwrite one of the most popular exhibit areas at The Children’s Museum of Portsmouth. The museum’s second floor Project Area is now supported with generous funding from Northeast Credit Union, ensuring that visitors will continue to enjoy hands-on art or science activities each day that the museum is open.

“We consider learning through hands-on participation to be part of the building blocks of education,” said Ramona Dow, Northeast Credit Union’s vice president – marketing and strategic initiatives. “The Project Area offers kids a wide variety of activities that can spark their creativity and enhance their learning experience. Northeast Credit Union is proud to provide funding to support such a wonderful family resource.”

“The Project Area is a favorite destination of children and adults alike,” explained Jane Bard, the museum’s Director of Education. “There is a different opportunity every day to work on a creative project or try a science experiment. This kind of interactive learning promotes self-expression and builds problem-solving skills in an open, nurturing environment. Support from Northeast Credit Union ensures that we will be able to offer exciting projects and creative materials to stimulate children’s interest in learning and exploring.”
