Tuesday, March 20 – Friday, March 23
Depending on which historian you talk to, Dover, NH celebrates 395 years as a settled community this year! At the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire, we are celebrating Dover’s history and the things that make Dover a great place to live today. Come celebrate what makes Dover special with these 4 themed-days:
Tuesday, March 20: Natural History of Dover
Throughout the day, dive deep into our CochecoSystem exhibit and learn about the natural history of Dover! Learn about the life of beavers, enjoy special storytimes, craft an Alewife and send it up the fish ladder, identify animal structures and learn more about the environment right outside our doors. Join a special guest from the Seacoast Science Center at 12pm in the STEAM Lab to learn about Coastal Critters. You'll even get a chance to meet and touch some live sea creatures!
Wednesday, March 21: Cocheco Industry
395 years makes for a lot of interesting history to explore! Did you know that children worked in the mills that still line the Cocheco River? Throughout the day, try your hand at cotton carding, learn about area inventions and inventors and also learn how to weave. Don't miss our special guest from the Woodman Museum, who will lead you in identifying tools from the past and also talk about the history of the mills in Dover from 1-4pm.
Thursday, March 22: Dover on the Go
Dover is a town on the move! Learn about all the ways we move around town – from trains, cars, horses to fire trucks! We'll have train story time, "things that go" crafts, marble track and car activities in the STEAM Lab and more. Welcome special guests, the Dover Mounted Patrol (10am), Fire Chief Eric Hagman along with a fire engine and crew (noon), and an educator from the Gundalow Company in Portsmouth (3:30-4pm) who will give tours of the Gundalow that resides in the Dover Adventure Playground outside the museum.
Friday, March 23: Community Helpers and Heroes
There’s so much to love about Dover. Tell us “What you love about Dover” and add it to our Dover Board, explore old maps of Dover, make a mail bag to help deliver important mail, and meet our special guests, Dover Mayor, Karen Weston (11am-1pm), and Dover Children’s Librarian, Patty Falconer (11-11:30am).
All activities are free with museum admission.
