July in the STEAM Lab: Get Outside with STEAM!

The STEAM Innovation Lab has lots of great drop-in programs scheduled throughout the week.

Saturday, July 1, 10am-noon & 1:30-3:30pm: Potato Porcupines
Did you know that a porcupine can have over 30,000 quills? Porcupines live in New England, and you can learn the signs and tracks to look for to see if a porcupine lives near you. Today in the STEAM Lab you can learn about porcupines, and make your own porcupine “chia pet” to take home.

Wednesday, July 5, 10am-noon & 1:30-3:30pm: Rockets
Happy 4th of July! After a weekend of fireworks and celebration, you can come celebrate with us at the museum. In the STEAM lab we will be learning about rockets and launching “mini rockets” inside as well as making straw rockets to take home.

Thursday, July 6, 10am-noon & 1:30-3:30pm: Straw Airplanes
Today in the STEAM lab we will be learning about flight and experimenting with different paper and straw airplane designs. Build your own and then test and improve your design. You can even measure how far your airplane flies and compete for the longest flight.

Friday, July 7, 10am-noon & 1:30-3:30pm: How Fast Can You Fly?
How fast can you fly a paper airplane? Build your plane in the STEAM Lab and then test it outside with a stop watch and our landing pad. Come back in and we will do some calculations to figure out how fast your plane was flying. We will keep a tally of the fastest flying planes! In the event of bad weather, we will launch the planes inside.

Saturday, July 8, 10am-noon & 1:30-3:30pm: Pet Rock Day
It’s Pet Rock Day at the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire! Stop by the STEAM Lab and learn about different types of rocks that can be found in New Hampshire. You can also add a rock to our “Kindness Rocks” community art project and make a good deed bead friendship necklace. There will be Pet Rock Day activities in the Muse Studio, so be sure to leave time to check those out, too!

Tuesday, July 11, 12:30pm & 2:30pm: Animal Camouflage
Today we will be learning OUTSIDE all about animal camouflage! Can you stay hidden in a camouflage game? Can you hide animals from their predators? Try out an animal camouflage craft, too. This activity will be drop in, but will start at 12:30 and then another session will start at 2:30. Feel free to stay for all or part of the session.

Wednesday, July 12, 12:30pm & 2:30pm: Frogs
Hop. Hop. Hop. Can you tell the difference between a frog and a toad? Hop over to the museum and join us OUTSIDE for a frog lesson! You can learn about the types of frogs that live in New Hampshire, and make a frog craft to take home. This activity will be drop in, and will start at 12:30 and then another session will start at 2:30. Feel free to stay for all or part of the session.

Thursday, July 13, 12:30 & 2:30pm: Sun Prints
Today we will be exploring solar energy OUTSIDE! Make a print using special solar paper, and learn about solar energy. This activity only works with our friend, the sun, so in the event of inclement weather, we will do an alternate solar activity. This activity will be drop in, and will start at 12:30 then another session will start at 2:30. Feel free to stay for all or part of the session.

Friday, July 14, 12:30pm & 2:30pm: Bird Zip Lines
How fast can you make a bird fly along a zip line? Learn about different types of birds in New Hampshire and make your own flappy friend out of a straw and craft supplies, then try it on our flappy bird zip line. This activity will be outside starting at 12:30 then another session will start at 2:30. This is a drop in activity- feel free to stay for all or part of the session.

Saturday, July 15, 10am-noon & 1:30-3:30pm: Water Slides!
Are you dreaming of going to a water park this summer? Stop by the STEAM Lab to try out a new engineering challenge: make a water slide that can carry a Cheerio. Learn about how slides work, and use our upcycling cart to make your own water slide, then try out your creation in the lab.

Tuesday, July 18, 12:30pm & 2:30pm: Straw Planes
Today we will be going outside and learning about flight by experimenting with different paper and straw airplane designs. Build your own and then test and improve your design. You can even measure how far your airplane flies and compete for the longest flight. Drop in starting at 12:30 and another session will start at 2:30 weather permitting.

Wednesday, July 19, 10:30am & 2:30pm*: Animal Day
It’s Animal Day at the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire! Join us outside to try out some of our favorite animal activities including habitat playgrounds, birds and beaks, and a pet washing station. Inside there will be special activities in the Muse Studio, and a visit from our animal friend guests: Cocheco Humane Society. STEAM Lab activities are drop in at 10:30 and another session starts at 2:30. Feel free to stay for all or part of the session. * Times may be adjusted so everyone gets time with our special animal guests!

Thursday, July 20, 12:30pm & 2:30pm: Sink the Yellow Sub
Join us outside for a drop in STEAM activity about sinking and floating. You will be challenged to try to sink a mini yellow submarine, and learn about which materials sink and float. Drop in starting at 12:30 and another session will start at 2:30. Feel free to stay for all or part of the session.

Friday, July 21: STEAM LAB CLOSED

Saturday, July 22, 10am-noon & 1:30-3:30pm: Bird Zip Lines
How fast can you make a bird fly along a zip line? Learn about different types of birds in New Hampshire and make your own flappy friend out of a straw and craft supplies, then try it on our flappy bird zip line. This activity will be in the STEAM Lab and we will test the birds outside.

Monday, July 24, 1:30-3:30pm: Sink the Yellow Submarine
Join us for a drop-in STEAM activity about sinking and floating. You will be challenged to try to sink a mini yellow submarine, and learn about which materials sink and float.

Tuesday, July 25, 1:30-3:30pm: Cup Stacking Challenge
Today in the STEAM Lab you can try out an engineering challenge, and see what types of different structures you can build using only cups and index cards. Can you build a tall tower? What about a house? Can you make a bridge strong enough for a toy car to cross?

Wednesday, July 26, 1:30-3:30pm: K’Nex Free Build
If you love building with K’nex, stop by the STEAM lab today and try out a building challenge. Can you build a swing and a slide, or even a whole playground? We have a lot of K’Nex to play with, so try our challenge or just be creative and build whatever you imagine.

Thursday, July 27, 10am-noon: Mini Structures
Today in the STEAM Lab you can build a miniature structure using toothpicks and some magic fluffy, sticky fun stuff (think of something you may have roasted on a stick this summer). Take the challenge and see how much weight your structure can hold!

Friday, July 28, 1:30-3:30pm: Lego Free Build
If you love building with Legos stop by the STEAM Lab for a Lego building challenge. Can you make a car, boat, or bridge? You can try a challenge, or build whatever you want to create. Have fun and relax with Legos!

Monday, July 31, 1:30-3:30pm: Straws and Connectors - Geodome
A geodesic dome is a special dome made up of triangles. This is the shape of some jungle gyms, so it may be familiar to you. Do you think you can build one? Try using straws and connectors to make a geodome in the STEAM Lab today.
