November in the STEAM Lab: Storybook STEAM

Since this is Family Literacy Month, in the STEAM Lab our drop-in programs will start with a story, and activities will be related to each story! We will be making boats, bridges, spider webs, and more. These activities are free with museum admission.

Wednesday November 1, 11am-noon
What’s Up, What’s Down? Bioluminescent Fish
Listen to the story What’s Up, What’s Down? By Lola M. Schaefer and make a bioluminescent fish craft with a glow stick. The story will start at 11, and the activity will continue as a drop-in activity until 12.

Thursday November 2, 11am-noon
Make a bridge for The Three Billy Goats Gruff
Listen to the classic story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and design and build your own bridge to help keep the goats safe from the troll. The story will start at 11, and the activity will continue as a drop-in activity until 12.

Friday November 3, 2:30-3:30pm
Make a web for The Very Busy Spider
Listen to the story The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle, and make a spider web water color painting to take home. The story will start at 2:30 and activity will continue as a drop-in activity until 3:30.

Saturday November 4, noon-2pm
Pretend Pizza Shop- Math and Counting
Today in the STEAM lab we will be celebrating Pizza Fest! Listen to some pizza stories starting at 12, and then make your own pretend pizza. Kids can practice counting and math to “buy” toppings for their pizzas. Story will start at noon, and the activity will continue as a drop-in until 2. Join us for Pizza Fest at the museum from 5-7!


Tuesday November 7, 2-3pm
Diggin’ Dirt: Make a Worm
Listen to the story Diggin’ Dirt at 2, and learn about earth science and soil, then make a fuzzy worm to take home. Drop in until 3.

Wednesday November 8, 11am-noon
Mouse Paint: Color Mixing
Listen to the story Mouse Paint starting at 11, then try a fun method for color mixing, and make a piece of art work to take home. Drop in until 12.

Thursday November 9, 11am-noon
Hot Air: Balloon Making
Listen to the story Hot Air, which explains the invention of the hot air balloon, and then make a mini hot air balloon to try out in the STEAM Lab. The story will start at 11, and the activity will be drop in after that until 12.

Friday November 10, 2-3pm
All Ears, All Eyes- Nocturnal Animal Guessing Game and Craft
Listen to the story All Ears, All Eyes and play a nocturnal animal sound guessing game, then try a fun critter craft. The Story starts at 2, and the guessing game will start right afterward. The craft activity will be drop in until 3.


Tuesday, November 14, 2-3pm
Hot Air
Listen to the story "Hot Air," which explains the invention of the hot air balloon, and then make a mini hot air balloon to try out in the STEAM Lab. The story will start at 2pm, and the activity will be drop-in after that until 3pm.

The Pout-Pout Fish in the Big-Big Dark: Circuit Making
Listen to the story The Pout-Pout Fish in the Big-Big Dark at 2, then try making your own circuit to make a light for the Pout-Pout Fish (he’s afraid of the dark!). Circuit activity will be drop in until 3.

Friday November 17, 2-3pm
Build a Bridge for the Three Billy Goats

Saturday November 18, 10am-noon
Center for Wildlife Visit: Nature as Our Muse
The Center for Wildlife will be visiting the museum for a special program: Nature as Our Muse. The Center for Wildlife will be bringing animal ambassadors, and the presentation will start at 10 with information about each animal and observation time. After that, the program is drop-in until 12, and families can use art supplies to paint or draw using the animals and nature as inspiration.


Tuesday November 21, 2-3pm

Wednesday November 22, 11am-noon
Flight School - Penguin Parachutes
Listen to the story Flight School at 11, then make your own penguin parachute to try outside (we suggest the tower in the Dover Discovery Playground!). This activity is drop in until 12.
